ABUSED: Violence Against Women In The South West Nigeria, launched

The book ABUSED: Violence Against Women in South West Nigeria was presented to the public yesterday, November 25, 2011 to mark the commencement of this year’s 16-day of activism and the International Day on Violence against Women.
More after the cut.

According to Effah-Chukwuma, “The 16-day of Activism against gender and violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991. The theme for this year 16-day is From peace in the home to peace in the world; Let’s challenge militarism and end violence against women.”  She stressed that violence begins from home and if not curbed, spreads to the society. “So, we must start to address the problem from the home front,” she pleaded.
She however stressed that the issue of violence against women does not mean the discourse is only for men. “It concerns even men because they at least have a mother, wife, sister or even girlfriend.” She advised that we must unite to end all forms of violence against women and young girls in our society.

The keynote address Eliminating violence against women in Nigeria: The role of religious bodies was delivered by Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of Trinity House Church. He stressed that even the church does not in anyway support violence against women.

The book is written by Nnorom, C.C. P and Effah-Chukwuma Josephine, Executive Director, Project Alert. It was reviewed by Moyo Oyatogun. It has seven chapters and a total of 98 pages. The formal presentation and launch of the book was done by Jimmy Agbaje.

The event took place at the De Ritz Hotel, G.R.A. Ikeja. It had in attendance Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, Honourable Minister, Fed.Min. of Youth development, Jimi Agbaje, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, Mrs Adekoyi who represented Mrs Oluremi Tinubu and  Country Representative of UN Women amongst others.
Formal presentation and launch of the book.
Women and human rights activists throughout the world have begun a 16-day campaign to promote awareness about violence against women and girls.

Well, done women. Let us all join hands to fight the battle against domestic violence against women and young girls!!!
