ABSU gang rape: Nigerians embark on protest walk tomorrow

A recent walk in Lagos on violence against women
Tomorrow, Wednesday October 5, 2011 Enough is Enough (EIE), a youth network in collaboration with Project Alert On Violence Against Women, Ruby Ink, Delta Women, Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) along with other civil society organizations would have a walk to protest the brutal gang rape of a young lady by five boys alleged to be students of Abia State University (ABSU).
The walk will take place at Okpara Square in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. At the same time, a protest would also hold at the Abia State Liaison Office in Victoria Island, Lagos and in Abuja where protesters would converge at The Eagle Square.
‘It’s barbaric and unacceptable. This time it’s a case of ‘enough is enough’ and we will make sure we get Justice,” says Esther Ijewere, Project Coordinator, Walk against Rape, a human rights organization.
Since the news of the gang raped was made public, many Nigerians have weighed in on the matter including the Minister of Youth Development, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi. He views the behaviour of the perpetrators as decadent and barbaric.
Mallam Abdullahi therefore calls on the University authorities and relevant security agencies to step up action to ensure that the heartless and wicked perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted in his statement.
However, the Abia State Governor, Dr T.A Orji, and the ABSU Vice Chancellor, Prof Chibuzor Ogbuagu, have both said the incident did not happen in the University or the State.
Well, let’s watch how all these play out. But what Nigerians want is justice, justice. justice!!!
