Supermodel Alek Wek talks about the future of African fashion

Alek Wek, the supermodel with the flawless skin and million-dollar smile shared the wisdom she has garnered from over a decade in the fashion industry.
Wek spoke about the power African fashion has to change the global industry. “Together we can make a profound change. It gives me chills when I think about it. If I can help in terms of wearing these wonderful designs and connecting designers so that they have the opportunity to be creative and the international market has the chance to see how much talent there is on this continent, then I will be happy.

As a young model, Wek struggled to break into the Western fashion industry where people referred to her African looks as ‘bizarre, weird and different’. But she soon realised that, there is room for every kind of woman within the fashion industry.
“We all have different qualities and that is what makes us gorgeous. In the end, fashion draws so much inspiration from this continent so why not celebrate the women from Africa?”

She was the first African model to grace the cover of ELLE US in 1997.
