How to cope with an ex at work

This can be avoided in the work place while working with an ex

Edward and Millicent were lovers back in their early days at the university. However, they had a rather horrible break up in their final year because of Edwards’s infidelity. Two years later, they both discovered that they did not only get a job in the same organization, but in the same department and so must work together.

At first, they both felt they could handle it, but I guess easier said than done. They keep hitting at each other at every slightest opportunity, hence, unable to make any significant progress in the task giving to them. But the truth is that they must produce results as workmates.

Here are some steps:

Keep a lid on it

If your colleagues do not know that you and your workmate have dated before, then, they don't need to know at all. But if they eventually find out, please keep the news of your split simple. Just say, "We broke up" and leave it at that.

Never call in sick

You may be tempted to do this just to avoid seeing your ex, but it is not really necessary, because you cannot quit your job just for him/her. Going to work simply shows that you can face him/her and that you are not thrown off your game.

Avoid arguments especially during office hours

Even if he/she says something totally horrible to you intentionally or in passing, just ignore it. Arguing with him /her will only lead to drama, and that will make you look unprofessional. I am sure after work hours; you will be happy with yourself how you handled it while reflecting.

Also, you can step out for a second to the bathroom to pull yourself together

Try to stay calm always

Even if you feel you are in a total mess inside and you feel like you might lose it, breathe in for a count of 10 and out for a count of 10. Keep doing this until you feel relaxed which you definitely will.

Still in love? Don’t show it

Even if you are still in love with your ex, don’t make it obvious. He/she may find it appalling and treat you less especially if he/she is dating someone in the same organization. 

 Keep away from touchy matters

 You should talk and act like co-workers but be careful to avoid sensitive topics. To avoid causing yourself more pain about your break up, don’t go reminiscing about what a great time you had when you were still together.

Talk it out

This is probably the last thing you would want to do, but honestly talking to your ex about how you can work side-by-side shows that you are more mature and professional. If it was a horrible breakup, you might also want to talk about whether you can switch projects so that you can avoid each other for a while instead of just pretending he/she doesn’t exist.
